As you can see, I am absolutely terrible at growing plants and have somehow managed to murder an evergreen bush.

What is the best way to bring this back to life?

Do you know those scenes from movies when they ring the bell someone opens the door and nothing is said but yet everyone knows ? This is one of those moments.

The recent introdution of both box blight and box moth mean it’s increasingly difficult to grow box in the UK. Try something that is less susceptible to pests and disease.

I had 2 of these. £70. Dead in 2 months.
Avoid Buxus plants now, they won’t last.

Funeral pyre and then choose a different replacement.

  5. (Good Will Hunting-style): It’s not your fault.

Spray paint it black for Halloween…then ditch it in the bomb fire. She’s done for.

Sacrifice your first born (or someone else’s if you don’t have one) then throw plant away and replace with something else

cut right back, remove from pot, gently rinse roots clean and re pot with the right soil. Keep sheltered from full sun/high winds and water if needed at the bottom… then wait. When theres a frost try to insulate it a bit.

My bay tree looked like this earlier this year… its a very small bay twig tree now but its survived 🥳 and I dont feel like a murderer anymore. Ive killed a cactus before!

You did nothing wrong. It’s just we can’t have box anymore due to blight and moth. It’s sad but we must come to terms with it.

Mine had been fine up until this year, but I’ve made the decision to remove it and make space for more robust plants.

Had mine for years. You’ve let it dry out I think. Not sure about recovery

You cant. It’s got blight. Burn it. Sterilise your tools and the pot. Dont try and grow Box in the UK anymore.

We had two at the front of the house for several years. Last year they just got ravaged all of a sudden. Had to dispose. Once it has got to that stage it’s all over.

  14. This happened to mine this summer, caused by loads of tiny striped caterpillars.

    The plant died

Get rid! Box is no good in the uk anymore. Try a good Ilex ceracifolia instead! (Holly that looks nearly identical to box)

  16. At this point it’s no longer a battle for its life, but for its soul.

Very hard cut back and it should recover depending on how bad it is. Same happened to my bux last year, got blight and moth, but all came back this year after heavy cut last year. Surprised me tbh as I thought they were all a gonner. Also surprised no moth this year.

  18. Try watering and wait. seems still alive. If it is insect (moth) attack or fungus disease ( box blight) which are both common on this box plant try Roseclear which stops infestation and kills fungus and rust. I have them and lost two in the bottom of the garden but saved the others. Warm February meant there was an insect infestation so early on in the year.

Box is a plant that you need to watch almost every day now!!

    Game over …

You could always buy a plastic one

Box caterpillars are becoming too prevalent now. We’ve removed a few meters of Box hedge to replace it – can’t pick off all the caterpillars, just too many. Nematodes and moth traps not effective enough. The chemical spray that works is not licenced for domestic use in the UK. It’s just not worth the fight.

  21. Subject-Yak-4279

Box are now not worth the effort. Even if it recovered you’d need to spray regularly to prevent just the moths. A yew could give a similar look.

I thought it was just me that killed them

Wish I’d seen all this before Saturday when I picked up a box plant from the garden centre. Had no idea this war on box was going on.

Set fire to it it’s full. Of disease and is a hopeless case do not mulch or compost get rid of now

  25. Box blight has hit everywhere this year.c
Nearly all box trees gone across the country

To many pests and diseases that love boxwood, replace it with a Yew
