After years of top dressing with compost there will be a little between the clay and the grass

Despite some of its drawbacks clay has some real benefits too. It’s high in iron and does a great job to help retain moisture. You actually want clay but it would’ve been nice for them to leave you some top soil to work with. This seems common in alot of new build neighborhoods in my area where the whole neighborhood is graded and staked out in lots. Often however the top soil removed is rarely put back

Looks like my yard! I live north of Atlanta, and there is no topsoil lmao this is your soil!
HummusDips
I have a slightly better soil than yours, but my plan is to core aerate yearly, remove all plugs and topdress with compost. Overtime, it’ll get better.
colesty
If you’re cool with reseeding I would give her a little soak to soften it up, add compost/topsoil and then til the top 4-6 inches to mix it all in, reseed and rake the seeds in
BernzMadeOff
Are you on Mars?
MongolianCluster
The developer scraped and sold it when they developed the land.
Fluid-Philosopher112
Lol what topsoil??? I live where they used to grow cotton and this is what our “soil” looks like.
jdextergordon
If you could work some gypsum into that clay you will unleash some serious grass growth.
waloshin
No wonder weeds are thriving.
claybird121
please god mulch your grass clippings in
Streetvan1980

Dig deeper, maybe you’ll find it.

It’s not uncommon for developers to scrape the topsoil off before they start a subdivision and sell it. Leaving the lucky homeowners with clay, rocks, straw and a couple pounds of fescue.
Long-Evidence6719
Hey that’s my yard. How’d you get here?
Kproper
This is why every yard needs deciduous trees.
tazzman25
Clay for miles.
That’s okay. Just amend it with a layer of top and you’re good. Some grasses can grow well in it.
grauemaus
Your in the south, thats the natural soil color. Unless you live in the Sandhills of North Carolina, and then it looks like sandy clay. Core aeration and gettting a soil test done by your agricuklture extension will help you how to address the issues and what you wish to grow.
Cute_Brick8795
They built your house on an old baseball field or track and field lot, look it up (I actually have no idea)
Fun-Visual2252
Lol not there
overripe_nut
If you have the time and money, till up the top layer and mix in compost and gypsum, then a layer of loam on top. reseed. Aerate and add compost every fall.
