I’ve been away for two days, and have noticed something rummaging around the base of the plant. I’ve trapped and dispatched 2 ground squirrels who were taking fruit/damaging other plants.
Is there any chance this would be a sign of root damage? Or am I dealing with another issue entirely? The canes themselves are still green, but the leaves are doing this and eventually falling off. This plant is in a 3×2 raised bed.

Or maybe normal fall defoliation? The weather is starting to cool, but I am in zone 9b.
