I’m always skeptical of rich dudes who got famous for one thing giving their hot takes on another. We need to stop giving celebrities the spotlight on whatever they want just because we find them compelling in one way. Hes a good entertainer. If he’s helping folks with his money and fame, good for him.

    Celebs arent experts in everything.
Smart people can be good at one specific thing and desperately bad at everything else.

It’s a fun show but nothing to take seriously.

  3. He’s a racist, sexist, posh dickhead, like most farmers here in the UK really.

He’s also specifically said that he got into farming to give his family generational wealth when they sell the land for property development. Yet now he’s seen as the leader of all the small farmers protesting the closing of the inheritance tax loophole that he’s trying to exploit.

I’ve watched every episode. First season is Clarkson getting in over his head about lots of things he doesn’t know about (farming in general), luckily he gets some local farmer sidekicks that teach him about how to farm.

The additional seasons are him trying to learn everything, and him becoming closer with his local friends. He has successes and failures.

All in all the show is funny and entertaining. It does show the difficulties and setbacks experienced by farmers, you get a good concept of how running a huge farm works.

Clarkson has owned that property for quite a while. The people that have become part of the show like Caleb already worked there. Him and Gerald know the land better than Jeremy did.

Here’s my take on it from someone who does more farming than homesteading. The first two seasons are very good. They really do give you a realistic insight into what it’s like to try to operate a farm when you have zero knowledge or skills. Regardless of his wealth, Jeremy falls into every conceivable pitfall of someone who owns land, has money and thinks farming is easy.

The other thing that it does well at putting a spotlight on it how fucking ridiculous zoning laws and the council can be if they got it in their craw that they don’t like you. I know the UK is a little bit extra on this, but I’m Canadian, which is probably somewhere between the UK and the US as far as stringent regulations in general. My preferred red meat abattoir sits in the center of a town of about 15,000 people here near me. The abattoir and the retail butcher shop have been sitting there since ages ago, and the town built up around it. Literally across the street there is a wildly expensive boutique hotel, catering to rich people from Toronto. As in when I’m backing my livestock trailer up to their gate, the nose of my truck is within 5 feet of $100,000 Audis and Beamers. The owners of the abattoir are terrified that one day the inconvenience of having real food production anywhere near rich clientele will put them out of business. You can even see this sort of attitude in this subreddit – the minute anything to do with animal processing or killing comes up. There’s a 50-50 chance it’s gonna get downvoted into oblivion.

I also really appreciate the frank and transparent discussions about money during the show. People have a romantic view about farming. The truth is that it simply doesn’t pay in many cases.

In general early in the show, I really thought they did a good job of being real about what it’s like. I find in the newer seasons, It feels much more contrived because I think they didn’t plan on continuing it but it’s such a cash cow They couldn’t let it go.

Clarkson is a pretty terrible person, but there’s probably some entertainment in this show for homesteaders and small scale farmers. Not that we have time to watch a lot of TV, of course.

  7. toilandtrouble

His show is therapeutic as a new farmer.

  8. Show proves it’s very helpful to start off wealthy.

  9. My-Beans

Clarkson is entertaining. He also using his farm to hide wealth and avoid taxes.

  10. SignalIssues

I have no idea how realistic or helpful the show is, but I love it and you should watch it because its enjoyable to watch.

Clarkson is first and foremost an entertainer.
Top Gear was automotive themed entertainment and not really a serious source of auto knowledge.
Clarkson’s Farm is farm themed entertainment and not really a serious source of farming knowledge.

I only watched maybe a couple of episodes as I find his arrogant & bumbling idiocy intensely annoying.

However, it’s probably good that it exists so that the general population – lacking much/any idea about where food comes from – can get some impression of the problems, and maybe help support more local producers.

Really good show. The last season was probably their worst imo hopefully will get better.

Love the show. I was doing many of the same projects minus cash crops, though, and the show made me feel so sad that he has money to turn to when there’s issues. It was much harder without.
