These two large ash trees just came under my care. What actions should I take to best help them thrive? They are in the Denver Area

I’m already assuming the following:

  1. Treat every 2 years for emerald ash borer
  2. Water. They get a lot of water in warmer months via lawn watering. I plan to water them twice monthly in the area under their branches during the winter in warmer days.
  3. Pruning. I am planning to prune them in the spring. Any advice on what to ask of the pruners or just have them do what they think is best?

Thanks!

    Consult a certified arborist.

Assuming that your tree is getting adequate water from when you water your lawn is not correct. Grass is greedy and will out compete your tree for water. Rainfall also does not provide adequate water to your tree.

Tree watering is done infrequently and slow and deep. Water and nutrient absorbing tree roots typically reside at a depth of 16-24 inches.

There are many resources online on how to properly water your tree.

The grade has changed on the first tree, burying the root flare. Expose it to lessen stress on the tree – tens of thousands of posts on the topic in the tree subs. You only need to water 2-3-4× total during winter. Let the ISA Certified Arborist assess on site what needs to be done.
