Dressed in vibrant floral outfits, more than 90 ladies from 24 teams brought a splash of colour to the greens of Northmead Bowling Club during its Flower Power Ladies Spring Day event on September 20.

The annual event, which also serves as a fundraiser for the club, attracted ladies from various clubs in Ekurhuleni and Heidelberg.

“Our greens are full today. We have 96 ladies whose outfits are inspired by different flowers. We are beyond excited to see all these ladies in their outfits.

“We have prizes for all the participating teams, as well as lucky draws and raffles,” said Merle Moss, part of the organising team.

The Tulips team of Kathy Bate, Alet Smith-Low, Elize Fritz and Linda Dippenaar were the overall winners, with Daisies in second place. The Peonies team of Wilma Richardson, Estelle King, Doris Frank and Cherry-Ann Mills finished third.

The event was started 17 years ago by Patsy Smook, who moved to Benoni from Primrose after her husband passed away.

“I ran the same competition in Primrose. When I came to Northmead Bowling Club, a lady I used to play with and I decided to start the event here. Our first event was successful and since then it has grown tremendously,” said Smook.

“In the beginning we used to host it on Saturday and Sunday but it became too much. We then decided to host it only on Saturdays.

“I haven’t been part of the planning team for the past three years, but I’m glad to see they still carried on with it. It’s a good get-together for the bowlers.”

Highlighting the event’s success, Smook added, “We’ve had lovely sponsors and people who have come from far to participate. It has grown into such an amazing event supported by our ladies from Ekurhuleni.”
