I had this fern outside all summer and just brought it inside since it’s getting colder, but it’s covered in these weird dirt-like specks that don’t just shake off. Are they pests or eggs? Some of them seem to have leaves sprouting which seems odd to me. The fern in general looks a little sick/too light colored even though it’s been getting plenty of rain & bright indirect light

Ferns have weird looking spores that grow on the back of leaves for reproduction. If you know the exact type of fern I would try googling to get a pic of what they should look like. Otherwise it’s normal for a plant to decline slightly when moving it inside after the summer

This is why I can’t do ferns, even though they’re beautiful! The spores make me weirdly uneasy

So this is super neat, those are bulbils. Basically it grows new ferns from those nodes on the fronds.

It kinda looks like a mother fern or Asplenium bulbiferum. Yellowing is normal if it was getting a lot of light, a north-facing window would be perfect for the winter.

Those are some type of flat mites or scale. Not sori (spore factories) that grow in row patterns on the underside of the fronds.

That’s a mother fern. They get those things on their leaves because if you pinch or cut that bump off with some leafs when it’s more mature it can be a new plant
