We got this shantung maple a few weeks ago at a local nursery. It was in a container. We planted it in the yard and it appeared to be okay for the first few days. However, we noticed the leaves becoming droopy and now they are crispy and falling off. I would say we water 3-4x a week, around 3-5 gal at a time. I don’t know what is wrong or what we could be doing better. Pics for reference. Any and all advice welcomed.

I think you’ve flooded it. When you over water, especially new transplants you deprive the roots of oxygen.
I believe the most common failures in transplants are overwatering and under watering.

You obviously took the container off the tree when you replanted yes?

Looks like your lawn sees a bunch of broad leaf herbicides, I bet that tree has succumb to it

Good luck! Don’t water for at least a week or two would be my last idea!

  5. Cut back on the watering, you only need to water a few times a week if it is scorching hot/sunner outside. At this point the only thing you can do is wait and see. The tree might lose all its leaves, but if you scratch the bark and you can see green then it is still alive.

Unless it’s about to go into winter. Or from the looks of it it is dead. And from too much water and to help the roots better you should have dug down a bit 6 put loose soil back in the hole to the right depth and then put the tree in and a little cal-mag for hearty roots. The stuff isn’t just for marijuana it helps all plants. And even tree roots should have good drainage for the oxygen to get back to the roots. That’s why you dig down a bit more to avoid root rot and that is what your tree shows is root rot.

Just plant a native sweet gum, similar leaves and fall foliage and MUCH hardier.
