The house dates back to the 17th Century but has been gradually added to over the years, resulting in a large, well-proportioned home. The interiors are the perfect balance between charming original features, such as exposed beams and sash windows, and modern comfort. This is thanks to painstaking restoration work undertaken by Alan and his wife. ‘We found woodworm and death-watch beetle and took out 48 skips of rubbish, but we respected the integrity of the house and made no structural changes,’ Alan told Country Life in a recent interview. The new owner would be able to move straight in and enjoy their new home, with only decorative work needed to put their own stamp on the house. The interiors would lend themselves equally well to traditional country-house style and a more contemporary take on classic English decoration.

A spacious entrance hall leads to the drawing room, sitting room and dining room, off which is a large country kitchen with an Aga in the fireplace. Upstairs, there are five bedrooms and three bathrooms, with generous storage in the loft space and the cellar. But this is not all. Behind the house is a detached outbuilding housing a 42-foot ‘party barn’ or workspace, including a separate WC, a large library area and a first-floor office – an incredibly versatile and useful additional to the house. Next to this is Alan’s beloved potting shed with a kitchenette, a WC and shower and a three-bay garage.

The summerhouse.
