Coat anything touching the ground or going in ground with tar. Apply to about a foot above ground level. Roofing tar works great at keeping everything out, insects and moisture.

It is very unfortunate to have to undo so much hard work. But you can take it as an opportunity to make some improvements or adjustments you may want to make.
