Maple tree approximately 25 years old. One of the branches broke and had to be cut. Is this cut ok? Do I need to apply anything to it or should it heal as is? Mostly worried about the main branch becoming sick.
There are options on the market to cover wounds on trees but if I’m honest with you they don’t do a hell of a lot. Just leave it as is, though I would say in the future don’t take your cut so close, it looks like you’ve cut into the branch collar which will inhibit the trees ability to heal the wound. Normally I would also say to clean the cut up and get it nice and flat, but it’s already cut too close to the trunk so I wouldn’t mess with it.
Looks like an epicormic sprout and yes that is a bad cut, but it’s silver maple. They grow fast and rot fast. There will most likely be a decay pocket there but it should seal over in a few years.

It’s not a great cut but i’ve seen much worse. I’d leave it rather than trying to clean it up more, which could result in accidentally taking too much material off in the wrong spots.

The tree/stem will likely be fine.
Sharpen ya saw mate. What’d you use, a cipro?
Mother Nature will take care of the tree
Pretty ugly but it’ll do
Bad cut but it’s okay
