Monty Don, the BBC gardening gem and beloved presenter of Gardeners’ World, has shared news of his upcoming public appearances and confirmed that his next projects will mark a move away from his on-screen career. The horticulturist took to Instagram to announce a special event at London’s Dominion Theatre. Captioning his post: “The Dominion Theatre, Tottenham Court Road, London, Sunday October 19th. See you there!” he also posted a short video message.
“Hi, it’s Monty Don here. I shall be giving a talk this October, October the 19th at 5pm at the Dominion Theatre in London, and there are just a few tickets left.”
“So if you’d like to come along, I’ll be talking about the creation of this garden, my life filming, and also perhaps a little bit about the dogs, then you’re very welcome, and it would be lovely to see you there,” he said.
The 70-year-old broadcaster has been a defining figure in UK horticulture for decades. His television debut came in 1989 on This Morning, where his regular gardening segment launched him into further TV work across the decade, alongside the start of a prolific writing career.
His first book was published in 1990, the first of over 25 titles he has authored, and between 1994 and 2006 he penned a weekly gardening column for The Observer.
Don became the lead presenter of Gardeners’ World in 2003, succeeding Alan Titchmarsh at the latter’s suggestion. He stepped away briefly between 2008 and 2011 due to illness but returned to continue inspiring viewers with his guidance on gardening techniques, design, and plant care.
His most recent series, Monty Don’s Spanish Gardens, aired in 2024, and in 2025 he began filming a new travel series exploring gardens along the length of the Rhine, from its source to the sea.
Speaking to The Garden Magazine in August 2025, Don outlined his upcoming schedule and future plans: “In April I started filming a new travel series going from the source of the Rhine to the sea, visiting gardens in Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany, Holland, and France,” he said.
“I’ve got a couple of gardens that I’m working on for charity and have more talks to do. That will take me through until November. I’ve decided I won’t do any more tours after that.”
Despite hinting at retirement from touring, Don previously stated that he had no immediate plans to step away from Gardeners’ World. Last year, he told the media: “I’m now 68, I was going to stop when I was 65. I’ll now go on till I’m 70 and then reconsider.”
