I am an arborist for a city in Wichita. We are moving away from B&B trees and toward Gravel Bed Bareroot trees. Check out the root mass on this 2-year old State Street Maple!
Irrigation- old school soaker hose. As much as needed to keep gravel moist. At most, once a day during hot summer days.
Additives- none. No amendments fertilizers or inoculations.
Mulch- we got scared last winter when a week long cold snap was forecast. Sub zero. I put the mulch on just in case but it probably wasn’t needed.
Depth- Completely cover crown. There is so much pore space in the gravel I don’t worry about the crown staying too wet.
Hold time- this is the first year we held for two seasons. These were put in the gravel beds Spring of ‘24 and will all be planted this Fall. Previously we would buy in Spring and plant the following Fall. I will probably move to holding them the extra year because of the huge increase in root mass.
Winter- this group of trees made it through two winters with almost no mortality.

Love it, as a bare root tree grower I’m so happy to see the advantage of light and easily plantable bare root trees. Not only can you plant it at the proper depth, you can prune any root defects.
