Monkey Puzzle trees are quite cold-hardy. They come from southernmost South America, in an area that has seasons and a fair amount of rain. Their biggest issue is that they aren’t drought-tolerant, but that isn’t an issue in New York.

I’ve seen plenty on long island. It’s a popular ornamental and landscaping plant in Europe and the US. There’s a lot in the UK too.
