I have an amalgamation of plant growth in this dirt. Usually I have thrown my failed grow attempts into the big pot of dirt on my porch, but when I transferred this plant into a bigger container, a bunch of plants started growing! I thought it was a bell pepper plant, but it’s getting taller, fuzzier and more confusing.

Very gently rub a leaf between your fingers, not so rough that you damage the leaf. If it smells like fresh basil, it’s basil. If it doesn’t, it’s something else.
    Visually, it looks like basil.

Big one looks like Zinnia, little one maybe a pepper.

Almost positive the tall one is a Zinnia and not Basil. Basil stems are square and not usually that hairy. Also the rate of growth aligns with Zinnias

  4. Zinnia (and the small one is a pepper plant). To everyone saying it’s basil look at the leaf pattern. There is no stem attaching the leaves to the stalk. Also OP should smell it.

  5. Zinnia. Basil isn’t fuzzy and basil has stems to each leaf. The small plant might be a pepper.

Basel! Check Baker’s street! Sorry, I had to. Also square stem?

That plant in your photo isn’t basil. Basil has more rounded, shinier leaves and a different branching pattern. This more than likely is zinnias, as already stated by others. But few reasons why:

The leaves are longer and more pointed, with a slightly rough/matte texture. They grow in pairs up the stem in a ladder-like pattern (opposite each other). Zinnias tend to shoot straight up like this when grown indoors or without much direct sun, which makes them look “leggy.”

So if you were expecting basil, you probably had some zinnia seeds mixed in by accident.

It’s not basil. I concur that it is a zinnia, and a pepper! Thanks yall!

  9. Rub the tall one between your fingers to detect if it smells like basil.

Edit: oh I see you already determined it isn’t basil. Sorry.
