Saw what looked like tulips to currently be in bloom in September, which seems extremely out of the ordinary.

What’s going on with these tulips? Genetic mutation? Odd weather? Located in coastal British Columbia.

Those look like a variety of crocus, not tulips

  2. Caspian4136

Those are crocus and there’s a variety that blooms in the fall, which is what we see here. They’re beautiful!

  3. Looks like what we call Herbstzeitlose in german. According to google the English term is meadow saffron?

Sometimes these fall crocus are the type where saffron comes from. I don’t think the kind photographed here but you can buy saffron crocus bulbs and grow your own saffron 🙂

  5. Saffron crocus bloom in the fall. See if they have little red threads in the center.

Those are fall crocuses. They’re doing what they’re supposed to.

Once, I planted some bulbs too early in the year (August or September) and they forever bloomed in November.

We call these “fake saffron” in spain, but they usually bloom by the end of winter here

also depends on when you plant. we planted some lilly bulbs in like july and now there blooming.

Those look like colchicums! They have bright pink blooms in the fall with no leaves on them.

say you’ve never seen a tulip without saying you’ve never seen one

Maybe an autumn crocus or a colchicum? They bloom in fall sans leaves

I have some right now in one of my gardens, too.

I wish my saffron would go ahead and bloom!

Mine also sprouted up a few days ago. I thought it was odd because they don’t usually come back until after winter

It’s an autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale). Beautiful bit careful with kids and pets – very toxic.

Have same thing happening with oxblood lilies the previous house owner apparently had lol it was a colorful little surprise

Like others said, fall crocus. They have green leaves that remind me of a sad hosta that grow in the spring and die off early in the year.

    Colchiques dans les près
    Fleurissent, fleurissent
    Colchiques dans les près
    C’est la fin de l’été

The saffron in those crocuses is weighing them down.

These are Colchicums not tulip, not crocus…

  22. WolfSilverOak

Those are Autumn Crocus, not Tulips.

    Quite a lovely display, too.

IDK what’s more confused – those crocuses, or me for initially expecting tulips.

  24. 12345esther

Saffron crocus, not tulips. They are autumn bloomers
