Hi there – I found these growing from a tree in the jungle. They had a sticky white sap coming from the part that broke off from the tree. Anyone know what these are? Are they edible/medicinal/have any uses?
This plant is in the oleander family (Apocynaceae) and other members of its genus Tabernaemontana are known to contain chemicals that are toxic or hallucinogenic. While it’s commonly used as a street tree, and if it were really poisonous, we would know about it, it’s still not something to experiment with.
GRUSM
Never ceases to amaze me at the stupidity of people who handle unknown flora and fauna before asking if it’s dangerous.

I have also heard that you should never eat even edible fruit from the ground in Hawaii. You can apparently get a brain eating parasite? 🦠

Okay so someone picks up a fruit, wonders if its poisonous. Thats a valid question to ask, and you’re over here trying to act like a smartass like “wow, imagine touching a plant and then asking if its poisonous how stupid” like what? They arent gonna die from touching it, latex is definitely a red flag but cmon now.
I agree, you are being a good sport. Its good to point out the poison ivy but in this case its just not a close lookalike it could be confused with. When I said that I was really just referring to the other guy. Like for mushroom foraging you have to handle the plant and do specific tests to make sure its not the poisonous lookalike, like once I had to cut into a mushroom to see if the oxidation turned it yellow or white to tell if it was poisonous. Like theres definitely some nuance that needs to be taken here an it was unkind. If that makes me a “weirdo” then idk man, my bad. I just find people who reply to others genuine inquiries with that sort of condescending attitude just insufferable. It kills peoples hobbies for plant stuff, its nice to have a lil community full of people curiosity.
Now for that last part, yes that is true. If that were the case that would be bad I totally agree.
