Well, this is a first. My name’s Helen. My name’s Helen. This is my channel, Helen. Mary Joe. If you’re new here, then welcome. If you’re returning, thank you. And if you’re a health bell, hello. I know I’ve got gardening gloves on. Don’t faint. So, um, if you’re a regular to my channel, you know this is Rob. Hello. Hello. Don’t say too much. Now, I saw this. I’m all for the like quick wins me, you know. Um, Rob’s disgust cuz he’s kind of the opposite. I mean, you’re a bonafidey gardener, aren’t you? Love gardening more than life itself, I think. And I saw this on somewhere. You know how it is. There’s so many different things. Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, whatever, whatever. And this is called lasagna planting. Well, they called it trifle, I think, on their one. So, it’s layers basically. Had you heard of this before? You have you done it before? Have you? Not that you noticed, but Well, no. I didn’t know that. Yeah. It’s what you do. Is it what you do? Well, there you are. What you do? I didn’t know. So, I went out and bought the ingredients basically to make this lasagna. And uh I got two of these pots. They’re nice, aren’t they? They were about £18 each, I think. Or were they more? Were they 22? Anyway, it’s an expensive hobby gardening lot. And we have got um I mean, I think this is a nice one. This is a nice one for if you know you’ve just got a balcony or a little patio or something. Bring color through. I mean, I’d like to do this with mom, actually. I think it’d be a nice thing to do, wouldn’t it? But like it it I mean what what I bought cost £80 and that was in B and Q with various discounts and things. Anyway, by the buy. So basically Rob’s put some broken crocs at the bottom of here to help with the drainage. And we’re going to go do this side by side. So this doesn’t happen very often where we do stuff in the garden together because I’m usually sunbathing and Rob’s usually working in the garden if it’s nice. So, um, you put the tulips, then the daffodils, then the crocers, and then we’ve got some little pansies. Yeah. Yeah. I’m just checking. Oh, pansies and violas. Are they different then? Yeah, they’re not all pansies. These are pansies. Oh, and the little ones are violas. Yeah. Oh, okay. I thought they were the same. Are they? Yeah. Anyway, they’re they’re so pretty. And I love these cuz they look like little old men’s faces. So, I’m assuming what we do first is put some soil in there. Yep. Put a layer of uh compost. This is a general purpose container and basket compost. Are you going to it? Yeah. So, I’ll hold it down there. Got three or four inches in the bottom. Is that enough? That’s enough, isn’t it? Yeah, that’s just one more. There you go. Oh, one for luck. One for that. That seems quite high now. I suppose that’ll water down, won’t it? Yeah. Yeah. Okay, you do yours then. You want me to hold it down? Working. Teamwork makes the dream work. There you go. Right. So that’s there. So now we’ve got I thought these were absolutely lovely. These are tall tulip and super parrot. Beautiful white with the kind of feathery edge. I do like things like this. They’re a little bit different. And I mean, you know, most of you ladies probably garden, but if you don’t, they go in with the pointy bit up, don’t they? Don’t look at me like that. Yes. Everyone has to learn, don’t they? I’m not I’m not criticizing. Yeah, but your face criticized me. Yes. How many of these do I need? Well, you want to put them in, as you say, the bulb is side down. So, they point up and you would put them so they’re not touching. No, hang on. These are mine. I’m doing mine. You’re doing yours. How many do I need was my question? Well, you need probably I don’t know six dozen probably to get in there. A dozen? Yeah. The guy in the video didn’t he only put about six in. Yeah. Well, oh well. Well, I suppose we just put whatever we’ve got, shall we? Let’s leave a gap. So, hang on. Let’s add How many have you got there? Three. I’ve got six. That’s you with six. Okay. That’s you with the other three. That’s nine. And then there’s six, seven, eight, nine. Oh, so it’s 10 each. There you go. Right. So, just put them just pop them in. Yeah. What? A few inches apart. Yeah. Just spread out like you do anything really, I suppose. Just you can when you’ve done those, you can show the camera, right? Without tipping them out. Don’t if you can see there. Oh, the arrangement is just around the outside and a few in the middle. That’s it. [Music] Right. Don’t mind. Then you put in another layer, do you? You don’t water them at this point. No, no. No. So, you leave that there. Yeah. I’m going to I love these old pots, by the way. They’re really old, aren’t they? Yeah, there’s about 100 years old, I think. About 100 years old. Wow. Incredible. See, they’re all hand handmade with a hole in the side. Got them from a guy in Surrey where we used to live. He was buying he bought the house and uh he had green houses and they were full of pots. I need him and he just wanted to get rid of them. A lot of them are cracked, but I think I got about hundred at the time. Oh, wow. Okay. Right. Crack on. Rob can never talk and do stuff at the same time, can you? It’s a bit of a lucky not a YouTube. So, again, couple of couple of inches over the top of that. Do you need to sort of make sure they’re the same? Yes. Yours is lower than mine. Much lower. Yeah, that’s it. Is okay. Doesn’t really matter. It’s not an exact science as you see. Yeah, but you want them to kind of come through at the same time, don’t they? That’ll be fun. So, now it’s um daffodils nick in mine. So, I got this one. I actually wanted to get um some other ones. I wanted to really get just these, but they only had the mix. So, we just go with mixed kind of bit of a hodge podge. So, these are the depths. The same thing. Well, let’s divide them up. How many have you got there? Two, four, six, seven. One, two, two, three, four, five, six, 7, 8, 9, 8, 9. It’s 10. That’s the same again. It’s obvious. Pointy side up. Is that it? How many you got? We had 10 each, I think. I got nine. Oh, well. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10. just to prove I am doing it. It’s a nice feeling actually. When will these come through? In the spring. Well, depends on the on the weather, but sometimes they might come up start coming up just before Christmas. Oh, really? Generally, if it’s mild. Yeah, but spring. Uh and and what comes through first? Well, the the crocuses. the crocuses. Right. So, that’s the next layer we’re putting in. So, it’s tulips. Tulips are generally the last that’s the last ones to they’ll be spring, won’t they? Yeah. Right. Top line. I feel like putting my name on this one so that we know where are we going to put them, by the way. Um, we don’t really need to display them cuz there’s not very much to look at really. They just put them at the back of the house. We are putting those nice things on top. We got them. Oh, yeah. I guess. Yeah, that’d be pretty. Yeah, we’ll put them at the back of the house. Yeah. Okay. Gosh, I thought that my bag might be too much. It’s not, is it? What do you mean? Well, I mean, there’s not much left. It’s an expensive hobby gardening, isn’t it? Oh, there’s Dobby. Someone’s outside. Right now, we’ve got the um We got the little ones. The little uh crocus. Crocuses. How many of those we got? Hey. Oh, doing it. I thought you were taking all mine. So, four. Yeah, Rob. These are hardest to tell which way up they are. Eight. They’re all different sizes. It’s 12. 14. I’ve got four, eight. So, I’m guessing the hairy end is the top. 14. It’s the hairy end the top. [Music] Yeah, it must be. Yep. No, that’s the root there. Oh, it’s the the hairy end is the uh the roots. Well, like that was mine. Which one? Which way round does this one go? So, the flat the flat bit goes up on top. I mean, to be honest, they’ll turn anyway. They’re so tiny they won’t grow downwards. That’s they always grow up because of they know which which way’s up. Yeah, but I’m just trying to So, which one’s the top and which one’s the bottom? So, the the bit with a sort of you can see button. Yeah, that’s the top. No, that’s the bottom. That’s the bottom. Okay. All right. The hairy bits the bottom. Yeah. It’s one with a little bit of uh some are a bit hairy and some aren’t. Yeah, it’s like life. Sorry, I’ve forgotten. That little belly button bit is the top. Bottom bottom. Bottom. What I’m talking about is that that’s the bottom. But to be honest, it it doesn’t really matter with crocuses. just as well cuz I’m not sure I’m doing all these right. I was I saw a thing. I didn’t tell you, Rob. I saw a thing and it said this is the time to go to the DIY shops and that because they’re getting rid of all their, you know, a lot of their plants because it’s kind of the end of plants. They’re starting to gear up for Christmas and there’s a lot of bargains to be had. But I don’t know if you need anymore. Not really. Huh? Mind you, gardeners never stopped buying plants, did they? Do you want to show your camera? There you can see. Yeah. Yep. We probably had two pots, but I wanted them to be exactly the same. I’m not sure we had a pair of pots, did we? The same. Probably not. No. Well, they’re already planted up. Most you do get broken. Yeah, the frost can even if they’re frost proof, if they happen to be wet and you get a hard frost, it will break the pots, right? Do Do we need to take this up to the top? No, that’s about it. They’re covered. They’re covered. And now you’re going to Right. Yours is lower than mine. Yeah. I’m haven’t finished mine. Okay. So, I just thought this would be something different. We’ve never done anything like this before, have we, love? No. And you’re doing a fashion video this week with me. Okay. Do you mind? Doing a fashion video. People think you’re damn tro. Tell them you’re not damn trotter. Rob is too old. Not I’m not unduly worried about it about being downtrodden. No about doing video. You don’t care, do you? Rob will just do like I have to tell you all that you don’t do anything you don’t want to do, do you? No. No. Not on any level. And it applies to some things that are a bit annoying as well, but we’ll leave that for now. Right. So, we’ve got Show Show what we’ve got here. So, we got the violas. They’re little tiny ones. Yeah. Um, these are called Midnight Glow. So, I suppose we’ve got to put each of those, haven’t we? Yeah. And I’ve kind of done this as much as anything for people that don’t garden like me. I don’t garden. Rob is quite impatient with me in the garden, truth be told. Doesn’t want You don’t really want me doing stuff in the garden, do you? You like gardening. It’s your domain. Yeah, I don’t mind. Well, yeah. Anyway, and I just thought for ladies that maybe haven’t done this, maybe their husbands have always done all the gardening and you know, you feel like just doing something for outside your front door or outside your balcony or whatever, whatever. I just thought it’s quite a nice little project, isn’t it? Because, you know, if it’s just you and your balcony, you can just do one pot. You don’t have to do a pair. And obviously, that would be a lot more uh achievable moneywise, right? So, we’ve got a tray of little ones each and a tray of big ones to share. Yeah. So, you got So, would we put the big ones in the middle and the small ones around the outside? That’ look nicest, wouldn’t it? Yeah. Okay. Right. Show me how you divide those big ones up then. Do I need to make like a dent? No. No. What we do is uh get the big ones first, wasn’t it? You going to put those in the middle? Yeah. Okay. So these are obviously in segments. So you got if you look at the bottom the way it’s divided nine. There’s it’s essentially nine plants. Is that one got a plant in it? Looks empty. That one’s rotted away. So you lost that one. But it’s not an issue. Um when you’re buying plants, don’t always go for the plants that are in all all in bloom because they’re all going to bloom eventually and die. So, and die. That’s encouraging. So, you just squeeze the the underneath and it’ll come loose. These are It’s quite a loose um compost here, so they come away quite easily. There you go. Right. That’s your little plant. And what do I do? Just sit it on the top. So, you can just make a depression as well. That’s what I’m saying. And just perch it there. And we’re going to fill in around it. Oh, okay. All right. So, I’ll make another depression. There you go. Oh, that’s so pretty. Isn’t that pretty? I love those. Be careful with the plant. If you can hold the leaves, not the stem, because you can if you damage it, you might not know your own strength and uh you’ll end up breaking the stem and that’ll be the end of the Oh, really? And obviously be careful of them because they tend to hook each other tangly if you pull them out. So another one there. A nice specimen. I’ll do the same with mine. I get another one yet. You’re not going to work on the three. No, because they’re they’ll kind of it’s they’re not separate enough to be like the the whole odd number thing, are they? because they’ll just be a show of hopefully of pretty. You know what I mean? It’s not like when you’re doing flower arranging, you always have an odd number. This will just be hopefully a show of beautiful flowers. Got a couple of quite leggy ones here for my one. These will all end up trailing mainly, but uh the ones on the outside will tend to keep them in in place. Right. So, now we just have to I’ve got a tray of those, so I just can do that on my own, can’t I? Yep. Do we put in the whole tray, you reckon? I mean, I bought them cuz they were three for an amount of money. So, possibly. Yeah. You got nine again. So, is that is that too many? Is that No. die. I

Nice video Helen…very relaxing to watch and your flower choices were really lovely. You (and Rob) really do crack me up. Love your relationship. I recon you guys could star in a very successful sit-com together. My favourite part of this was when you very assertively questioned Rob, whilst holding a steely fixed stare his way – “YOU’RE NOT DOWNTRODDEN ARE YOU?” Comedy gold Helen!!! I've been meaning to try one of these for years but you've inspired me to go and get the lasagne ingredients together now. After the initial watering, do I have to keep watering or can I just leave mother nature to get on with it over Winter Rob?

Thank you for posting the second part of the video. Your pots looked really pretty. I have never thought to layer the bulbs before. I planted some tulips last year in pots and they came up beautifully, however, most of them didn't flower and the ones that did the heads just shrivelled up and never really flowered properly. I also planted some miniature daffs and have never had any flowers on them at all. I was so disappointed.
What a wonderful day working together. I've never seen this planting concept. Super such fun.

Here in Ontario the weather man promises one more month of nice weather AND THEN FALL really starts messing with those temperatures. Today it's getting a bit colder and raining and starting to get gloomy. Soooo you and Rob in the garden cheered me right up. The flowers are gorgeous. Our Summer here was HOT and so some plants simply did not make it but now the plants that are left are blooming like anything. Everything from MOON FLOWERS TO ORCHIDS ETC. MANDOVILLA is just beautiful.
Go figure.
