Gorey Tidy Towns have labelled a garden a litter blackspot after an increase in rubbish.

In recent months a public garden in Gorey has become a “litter blackspot” according to the local Tidy Towns group as they have noticed an increase in litter in the area.

The area of concern to the group is An Ghairdín Draíochta (The Magic Garden), which is located on the Coach Road at Gorey Bridge.

Chairperson of Gorey Tidy Towns, John Woodbyrne said volunteers for the group have been working to ensure the area remains clean, yet rubbish continues to build up in the area.

“It’s making it unpleasant for people going down to the area.”

PRO Cliona Woodbyrne said the pace at which the litter builds up is high, and said glass bottles, discarded clothes and food containers were among the rubbish left in the garden. “I did a litter pick there on Saturday and it is just beer bottles, spirit bottles, food containers.

“The litter there is absolutely dreadful,” Cliona said.

Gorey Tidy Towns recently did an Autumn clean at the garden on Saturday, September 13, but had to clear away the litter before starting the gardening they initially planned to undertake.

Cliona said she the car park area was full of litter and had to ask a member of the public to wait before parking their car. “I had to do a litter pick in the car park area because it was so dreadful.”

An Ghairdín Draíochta (The Magic Garden), is a bee and butterfly friendly garden created by Gorey Tidy Towns in 2014. The garden aims to be haven of biodiversity, with two garden seats in the centre for locals to relax and unwind on.

Gorey Tidy Towns also highlighted some areas of concerns and are asking the public to take any litter home to dispose accordingly.

Some of the areas included the back lane of Pettitt’s SuperValu, the car park at Gorey Little Theatre, the laneway off Esmonde Street, and the car park at Redmond Electrical.

They also said the Civic Square at the courthouse and library needs attention on a regular basis.

Gorey Tidy Towns continue to volunteer in the area to ensure Gorey remains a clean environment, by litter picking and maintaining specific areas of concern. It is asking the public to be mindful of littering and to dispose of their rubbish accordingly.
