A popular brewery is opening a new pub on the site of a historic eel and pie shop. The Black Eel will be opening this autumn in Dalston with one of East London’s biggest beer gardens.

The Kingsland Road site was once home to F. Cooke, one of London’s oldest pie, mash and eel shops, which was once a huge feature of life in Dalston. Popular brewery Exale, who also have a taproom on the Blackhorse Beer Mile, will be transforming the Grade-II listed building into a a new pub and community space.

Exale will be “breathing new life into the space” by bringing a main bar, karaoke room, darts boars, shuffleboard space and lounges across a 250-seat interior. There will also be a 150-seat beer garden and pétanque court.

The Eel Pub will serve up delicious seasonal food from its kitchen – Riley’s – expect steamed mussels, marinated chestnut mushrooms and Sunday roasts. Customers can wash this all down with one of Exale Brewing’s beers, from hazy IPAs to fruited sours, alongside craft beers, cocktails, and natural wines.

There will be a lot of pressure on The Black Eel, as it seeks to fill the big legacy left behind by F. Cooke’s. The pie and eel shop, which closed-down in 1996, was once described as the “Buckingham Palace” of pie shops due to its lavishly decorated and elaborate interior.

F. Cooke’s original features will remain, including the tiled shopfront, arched windows and the doorway mosaic bearing the “Cooke” family name.

This will be the fourth venue opened by the group, which also runs the Exale Tap, Three Colts Tavern and William The Fourth Leyton.

The Black Eel will open its doors to the public on October 24 at 41 Kingsland High Street, E8 2JS.
