“Only boring people are bored,” everyone’s mom has said at least once. Acting is, in many ways, a boring profession. Sure, the stunts and smooches and big crying scenes are fun. But so much of an actor’s time is spent waiting. Do you know how long it takes to light a set? It’s insane. And so, actors have got to have hobbies. They could sit perfectly still staring blankly ahead like Hailey Bieber in that one profile of Justin. That’s an option, technically. But it’s better to keep busy. Joan Crawford, for example, was a knitter. She’d probably be crazy on YarnTok.

Josh O’Connor has diversified his hobby portfolio. Dude is booked and busy in the time-killing arts. Below is our attempt at a comprehensive list of the Wake Up Dead Man star’s hobbies. We say “attempt,” because it seems like every red carpet interview sees him discussing a new one. We should all be hobbymaxxing this well.

O’Connor has spoke on his love of gardening many times. He attended the Chelsea Flower Show on his birthday last year, and told British journalist Liv Marks that one of his heroes was celebrity horticulturalist (which is apparently a thing) Monty Don. In 2024, he told the Guardian that planting things in England is extra difficult, but that it makes the pursuit all the more worthwhile. “Gardening is, at its heart, a small act of life,” he said. “You tend to this thing, which gives you some joy for, particularly in the UK, like, two months of the year. Then it dies and you tend to it again, you enjoy it, then it dies. It’s repetitive and pointless, but we do it.” When asked if he wants to be working as much as he’s been these past few years, he said “I love making work, but I also love being in my garden and tending to plants and watching them live and die.” Also he built a pond and he wants frogs to live their so bad. Can we make this happen for him?

As he told Vanity Fair, O’Connor has had a lifelong relationship with ceramics: “My grandmother was a ceramicist and my grandfather was a sculptor.” He says he enjoys working with clay because even the warmth of your hand affects the final product. “I think it’s the most pure form of creativity,” he says. O’Connor also showed of some of his ceramics collection during his GQ Essentials video (more on that later).

One of O’Connor’s GQ essentials — the things he cannot live without — is scrapbooking glue. Two other items on that list? Two different scrapbooks. O’Connor makes a scrapbook for every film or TV character he does, as part of his process. He also has a personal scrapbook for understanding the most complex character to play of all, Josh O’Connor.

Josh O’Connor has a camper van which he has named Winnie. “She used to be called Winston,” he says. We support Winnie in her new name.
