ANNISTON — The Calhoun County Master Gardeners will present the last installment of their 2025 Lunch and Learn series with a program titled “Wildlife of Pelham Range.” The event will take place at the Cane Creek Community Garden Classroom, located at 77 Justice Avenue in Anniston.
The Lunch and Learn series is designed to provide educational opportunities that deepen understanding of nature, gardening, and sustainable practices. Those interested in becoming certified Master Gardeners can contact the Calhoun County Extension Office at 256-237-1621 or email Sarrorg@aces.edu for more information.
In addition to the scheduled program, Anniston Fire Chief Johnny Phelps and Assistant Chief Jason Brown will provide a special presentation on fire safety. Their session comes during October, recognized nationally as Fire Safety Month, and will address important questions about controlled burning. Topics include the pros and cons of burning, necessary permits, steps to protect homes and property from wildfires, and the benefits of controlled burns.
Chief Phelps has served with the Anniston Fire Department for more than 24 years, progressing from rookie to training chief before becoming fire chief. Assistant Chief Brown, who also serves as the city’s fire marshal, oversees the Building Code and Enforcement Department and leads fire prevention and safety education efforts.
This Lunch and Learn program continues the Master Gardeners’ efforts to connect the community with valuable resources, combining expertise in both environmental education and public safety.
