Just seeded on the 5th with perennial rye here on the west coast in Washington.

Curious when others recommend first mowing? Are we waiting on a certain height?

Roots seem decent already as I tugged on some areas and it seems well rooted and did not want to pull out at all.

Teenagers also walked through it and it bounced back nicely a few days later.

I wanted to use my manual reel mower for the first mow, get on get off. Mower is light.

Should I wait or go for it?

Let it grow to 4”, cut back to 3”.

It looks solid, but still a bit short? Maybe hard to tell from the photo. But it looks mature enough I think if it’s tall enough to mow, just turn gently.

I would wait. Maybe 2 more weeks. Then first now cut at the highest level possible when wait another 2 weeks and mow at a standard lev, 3.5 to 4″.

Beautiful lawn, nothing bad growing anywhere. When  I get a break from work I need to get rid of my weeds Was my first thought

  5. Hey, I’m in the NW as well, down in Oregon. have you noticed with our warmer weather the last few years that perennial rye grass struggles in the summer? I overseeded the last two years and it looks great, but even watering evenly, it struggles when it gets super hot. I’m trying tall fescue to see if that grows any different here.

  6. Off topic from your question, just gotta say that the edge along your lawn next to the walkway looks so clean. Recently edged back the super overgrown path in my yard and it looks absolutely awful, hoping I can have one as pretty as yours someday.

Looks pretty alright, but that’s coming from someone who doesn’t own a front yard or a house as a matter of fact
