Inverclyde Council joined Sanctuary Scotland to support Scottish Housing Day 2025, embracing the importance of good neighbours and sustainable communities.

Scottish Housing Day is an annual event which aims to raise awareness of the challenges and successes in Scotland’s housing sector.

To celebrate the occasion, Sanctuary held two events showcasing the importance housing plays in local communities.

The first took place at their Duncan Street development in Greenock, where they are delivering 64 new homes close to the town centre.

As part of Sanctuary’s commitment to the local community, they donated materials to Belville Community Garden Trust, a volunteer-led charity focused on bringing community groups and individuals together in the east end of Greenock.

The trust promotes a safer, stronger community and works to improve lifestyles and health, primarily through gardening, horticulture and healthy eating.

Representatives from Belville Community Garden Trust and Inverclyde Council attended the site to hear how local construction projects can benefit the wider community.

Councillor Paul Cassidy, Inverclyde Council’s vice-convener of environment and regeneration, said: “What better way to celebrate Scottish Housing Day than by visiting one of our newest housing developments here at Duncan Street in Greenock and seeing the excellent progress that’s being made.

“We’re proud to be supporting our partners Sanctuary in transforming this prime site, which previously house Greenock Health Centre, into a community of 64 new affordable homes for social rent which are due for completion in spring 2026.

“It’s also heartening to see Sanctuary embracing community benefits and looking at ways in which this important and exciting development can support the wider Inverclyde community by collaborating with Belville Community Garden, which is one of our fantastic, local charitable organisations.”

Gillian Lavety, Sanctuary’s Development Director for Scotland, commented: “Our mission is to deliver new homes and sustainable communities where people choose to live.

“Scottish Housing Day is a timely opportunity to reflect on the importance of that commitment and celebrate the strength and positive impact of our local communities.”
