A Mold business has helped transform unused land at Liverpool University into a flourishing community garden.
The Justice Garden project, led by Professor Helen Stalford and Sioned Edwards, turned a previously neglected plot into a thriving sanctuary for learning and wellbeing.
As part of the first phase, completed in May, two groups of around 20 young asylum seekers created the garden as part of their studies at Liverpool College.
They planted and landscaped the space, while also building benches and a table from timber donated by Mold-based P&A Group.
The contribution allowed participants not only to grow plants but also to construct seating that is now regularly used by staff and students.
Additional donations came from Protek, who provided woodstain, and Melcourt, who supplied compost.
Professor Helen Stalford, Principal Co-Convenor of the Centre for People’s Justice, said: “We had a fantastic year developing the Justice Garden and everything has bloomed. Our garden may be small, but the impact has been huge – on the land, and on the lives of these remarkable young people. Staff and students routinely come and sit in the garden throughout the year so everyone is getting to enjoy it.”
The work was celebrated in June with a certificate ceremony recognising the young participants’ achievements.
Rhys Hughes, Director of P&A Group, said: “Along with all the sponsors, we’re thrilled to support Sioned Edwards and Professor Helen Stalford on the Justice Garden project and to see our donated items become part of something so inspiring. It’s incredible to witness how this once-unused space has grown into a hub of creativity and learning. The dedication of these young people is truly admirable, and we’re proud to have played a role in helping bring this vision to life.”
The Justice Garden initiative is set to continue with a new group of participants next year.
A new partnership with the University’s Gardening Society will also expand the project to include a herb and vegetable garden.
The P&A Group, which comprises Zest Outdoor Living, the Woodworks Garden Centre and Café in Mold, and P&A Pallets & Packaging, is a family-run business established in 1985 with a longstanding timber manufacturing heritage.
