The David Douglas Botanical Garden Society has launched its official website for Khasdzoon Yusk’ut Botanical Garden (KYBG), Northern BC’s emerging premier botanical destination located at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC).
The garden’s name, Khasdzoon Yusk’ut, meaning “Red Maple on the Hill” in Dakelh, was gifted by the Lheidli T’enneh Elders Society with guidance from Elder Edith Rose Frederick. The garden is honoured to carry this name, which connects it to the Indigenous knowledge and cultural legacy of the land and guides its ongoing commitment to respectful stewardship.
“We are excited to share our story and progress with the community through our new website,” said Catriona McLennan, board president with the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society. “Khasdzoon Yusk’ut represents more than just a garden. It’s a living expression of Indigenous knowledge, native plants, and community connection.”
The new website, which was made possible through a grant from Northern Initiatives, can be found at kybg.ca. The website showcases the garden’s development of the main 11-hectare botanical garden under construction as well as the David Douglas Educational Display Garden.
A video showcasing KYBG’s vision and the start of the construction progress was created through a generous grant from Tourism Prince George and can be found here: Khasdzoon Yusk’ut.
“The video created by 6ix Sigma beautifully captures the story of the David Douglas Botanical Society and the incredible volunteers who have poured their passion into growing and nurturing the gardens. Their dedication is transforming the space into a true community treasure, now showcased on Gardens BC. It inspires both visitors and residents with the possibilities of what can flourish in our region. Tourism Prince George is proud to support their amazing initiatives and celebrate the impact they have on our community,” said Carmen Herman, interim CEO, Tourism Prince George.
Volunteers Urgently Needed
As the garden continues to grow, the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society is actively seeking community volunteers to help bring this botanical vision to life. From planting and weeding to guiding visitors and supporting events, volunteers are essential to the garden’s success and play a crucial role in creating Northern BC’s premier botanical destination.
Every path laid, plant nurtured, and sign installed has been made possible by dedicated community members who share the passion for creating something truly special. As the garden continues to expand, more volunteers are needed to support this growing vision. No experience is necessary, and training and tools are provided. The volunteer opportunities are suitable for individuals, families, and groups looking to make a lasting impact on their community.
