I have an apple tree in my backyard (no idea what kind) that had a branch snap off in a recent storm. The weight of the apples mixed with the high winds caused the breakage. We removed the majority of the snapped/dead branch but the crack does go further down the tree trunk. I have attached photos of how it looks currently, and how it looked filled with apples (in case the species matters). I have been told to wrap the remaining crack, fill it with a putty of some kind, and to leave it alone completely – which has left me completely clueless. I would prefer not to cut it, as it is the only tree providing shade in the yard but if that is the only option we can. We are in Canada and will have a very harsh cold winter with lots of snow starting in a few months. The break happened several weeks ago. Any advice appreciated.
