Vandals Tear Up Community Garden on Cathedral Grounds

The cultivators of a community garden in downtown St. John’s are devastated after somebody went in and destroyed many of the crops – food which is given to people in need.

Maxine Gladney says they arrived at their wellness community garden at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Friday to a terrible sight. A lot of the plants had been torn up. The group uses the veggies – potatoes, peas, carrots, kale, cabbage and lettuce- for Thanksgiving hampers and for meals at Christmas.

Gladney, one of the volunteers who helps out, says the food is given to anyone who asks. In the years it has been operating, she has never seen anything like this.

“This was not about food – it was pure vandalism because the plants were just torn up and thrown down,” says Gladney. “And to do this in a time when we are all struggling with food insecurity”

They have contacted the RNC.
