Why is this already splitting?

I bought this a couple/few months ago. The “new guy” was already there. At that point, I didn’t know that the outside leaves should be shriveling to help the new guy grow. Once I saw others go through the process, I thought it might have died in this stage. But since I got these because I thought they don’t require much care, I decided to ignore and wait and see what happens.
Then I saw a watering schedule online and decided to give it a little water a week/week and a half ago. This schedule went by seasons, not growth stage. I took a peek at it yesterday and the new guy is splitting. I’m not even sure what my question is. I guess has anyone had this happen before? The new guy has a very healthy green color coming up.
