ROCKFORD — Anderson Japanese Gardens has been recognized by HGTV as the state’s most beautiful garden in the network’s recent online feature, “The Most Beautiful Garden You Can Visit in Every State.”

The 12-acre gardens, nestled away at 318 Spring Creek Road, features winding pathways, waterfalls, koi ponds and tranquil landscapes designed to reflect the spirit of class Japanese gardens.

“This recognition by HGTV deeply honors our team, volunteers, supporters, and all who believe in the power of nature, art, and design to uplift,” said David Anderson, a founding family member of Anderson Japanese Gardens, in a news release. “For years, we’ve sought not merely to create a beautiful garden, but to offer a place of peace, reflection, and connection for the community. HGTV’s acknowledgment reinforces that we are achieving that mission.”

HGTV, an initialism for Home & Garden Telvision, is a basic cable channel owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. It also includes HGTV Magazine, as well as streaming and online services.

Anderson Japanese Gardens was founded in 1978 by businessman John R. Anderson, who was inspired by his visit to Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon and other locations. The gardens were designed by Master Landscape Architect Hoichi Kurisu, who meticulously designed every element “from the placement of stones to the alignment of trees,” according to Anderson Japanese Gardens. The property includes a 16th century Sukiya-style guest house, constructed by Japanese craftsmen in 1985.

“Master craftsmen from Japan created this 12-acre meditation in motion, where every stone, stream, and maple has been placed with intention,” HGTV wrote in part of its selection of Anderson Japanese Gardens.

The gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through the middle of November. There is also an on-site restaurant, Fresco at the Gardens, which offers breakfast and lunch service starting at 8 a.m. seven days a week.
