I love seemingly “lost causes” like this. Can you say how it broke? Something hit it? Weather?

If you’re ok with an atypical look, wonky tree; read further. If not, could explore grafting.

Anyway, onto preserving this poor little guy.

To start, saw 🪚 the snapped parts at an angle, at like 45°. The angle is to make it so water or detritos doesn’t sit on the tree and induce decay and/or a comfy environment for mushrooms to take place. If you have shrooms anywhere on the tree, that indicates decayed, moist wood.

Looks like you have some beautiful lichen, which typically indicates a healthy tree and clean air (which lichen requires). Lichen likes setting on a tree that isn’t growing so rapidly, and it helps feed nitrogen to the roots of the tree when it rains.

Do not cut any of the stems that aren’t broken.

Some words that may spike your creative juices: Niwaki, bonsai, espalier.

A great book to read, no bull, is Cass Turnbull’s Guide to Pruning.
