I have been trying to figure out how to air-layer my large, 20+ year old in-ground tree philodendron/Philodendron bipinnatifidum. The directions I’ve read online just don’t make sense with this plant. I was hoping it might help having it explained here.
When they say to “find a healthy, mature stem with at least one leaf” – I only see one leaf stems here. Or “cut just below a leaf node” – is that meaning the spots where previous leaves were?
I feel like I should be able to grasp this idea but it’s just had me totally confused. Any help y’all can give is very much appreciated!!

You are over thinking it! Chop the top off and let it dry snf callous over for a couple days. pop it in a bucket with some well draining media. Leave in shade and dont water, it has no way of absorbing it. If you want more props, cut a few more chunks of stem and do the same. The mother will re shoot, the stems will all grow roots of their own, but it will take several months.
I love air layering especially for larger plants. I have personally used dirt or sphagnum moss with just regular ole plastic wrap. Just check on it and ensure that you are checking the moisture inside of the area you’re air layering. I keep up with watering mine
Have t had any issues thus far. It will help minimize plant stress and avoid leaves dropping.
