Green Island Gardens, Ardleigh, will be will be open to visitors from 11am to 4pm on Sunday, October 12.

While most gardens are past their best in the autumn, Green Island Gardens comes alive with fiery autumn colours.

Green Island Gardens was the overall winner of the RHS Partner Garden of the Year 2024, with 20 acres of gardens and woodland.

The gardens house two national plant collections, hamamelis and camellias, which flower in autumn and winter and will be on display in October.

Visitors will be able to see more than 100 different varieties of acer, along with liquidambars, nyssas, fothergillas, cotinus, stewartinas and many more shrubs and trees as they change colour for the season, along with a vast array of fungi.

The gardens and woodland are deliberately planted for year-round interest, with different plants blooming at different stages.

Green Island was professionally designed by Fiona Edmond, and features a Japanese garden and terrace, seaside and water gardens full of rare and unusual plants.

A spokesperson for the gardens said: “Through autumn the acers, and acid loving trees and shrubs bring the garden to a fiery foliage finale along with the national collection of autumn and winter flowering camellias.

“There are many features around the garden all made from materials found on site, including seats, tables, an arbour, the tree house, fairy house and decking spanning the pond.”

All proceeds will go towards the National Gardens Scheme (NGS), which donates money to nursing and health charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and the Queen’s Nursing Institute.

Annual donations raised more than £3.5 million in 2024, with an overall total of over £74 million raised.

The garden is accessible for wheelchair users, and children are welcome.

Tickets are £10 for adults and £3.50 per child. Advance booking is not required.

Light lunches, cakes and refreshments will be available in the garden’s tearoom. Picnics are allowed in the car park area only.
