Hey guys, I’m new but I need some help. So my echeveria was light starved so I bought him a grow light but he’s not growing as fast as the other one. And his waxy coating is smudged on some leaves. What should I do???

So first, the waxy coating (farina) will smudge off when touched. It won’t grow back, but it’s there to protect it from harsh sun, which doesn’t seem like it’s a problem. Just try not to touch the leaves as they grow back in.

The part of the stem that is stretched won’t grow back to normal. Your options are to have your echeveria on a tall stem or to cut its head off where it is growing properly and plant that. You can do that as easily as just chopping it off and laying it on the dirt next to the stem (it’s suggested you let it callus over a few days before doing that). The stem will likely grow a new head as well, and you’ll have two.

Peel off all those leaves on the stem, and lay them on the dirt as well, and they may have babies. And toss that black one, it looks dead (unless it’s sunburnt; I can’t really tell on my screen).

While I’m not sure what your other one is, there are variations in echeverias in that some grow faster than others, or you could have an echeveria hybrid such as a graptoveria or sedeveria which tend to grow faster on the average.

Whatever the case, the new growth on your echeveria looks good, so your grow light is working. Echeverias are slow growers in general.
