Radishes are a fast, easy, surefire fall harvest crop for planting in September, says Edwin Dysinger, co-founder of Seedtime.
Dysinger recommends direct-sowing radishes in your garden. Direct-sowing, or direct-seeding, means planting the seeds directly into outdoor garden soil instead of starting them in pots.
To extend your harvest past the fall, seed every week.
“This will keep you well stocked with fresh radishes from early October through the middle of December,” Dysinger says.
For a different addition to your fall dishes, Dysinger recommends French Breakfast radishes.
“I really like them because of their unusual cylindrical shape, bright red shoulders, and snow-white torsos,” he says.
Sweeter than common red radishes, they still have the unique peppery taste found in most radishes.
