Found on a walk by a field. Out in the middle of nowhere southern ontario, canada. Im just curious what this thing is. I found a caterpiller chilling on one of them.
That’s a milkweed seed pod. Likely a monarch caterpillar munching away to build up toxins for later in life. They’re pretty easy to grow and attract other pollinators.

Milkweed seed pod. Eventually you’ll see fluff coming out of them!

You’ll probably start seeing Milkweed all over now that you know what they are, they’re always worth a check in the spring & summer for Monarch Caterpillars, or the Chrysalis. I usually find a few every year. The caterpillars are pretty striking themselves too.
Milkweed seed pods. My cousin and I would pick one each and use the latex inside as glue, which works surprisingly well, though it takes a few days to fully ‘cure’. We would also plant the seeds around because we both had learned about monarch butterflies being endangered and that they lay their eggs on it so that the caterpillars would be toxic in adulthood.

When those dry out, open them. It’s filled with hundreds of the softest seeds in the world and they are awesome on a windy day to throw in the air… seriously it’s awesome!!
My favorite thing about growing milkweed. Also, Milkweed is Monarch butterfly food…so having those means you have butterflies somewhere.
Keep!

Instantly recognize that as milkweed, seed, pod, I’m growing some right now. It’s our native too.
I grow it to hopefully help the monarchs
