My gardener just dug this little trench for my yews. He said planting 1 ft away from the house is correct but this looks too close đŸ€”

how wide will they get at maturity?

i’ve always been told that plants shouldn’t touch the home.

    cheers!

Way too close to the foundation and no room to grow

Google the mature size of the cultivar. Plant far enough away from the house that they’ll have room to grow in 360°, and you will still have 2 feet to walk behind.

While you’re googling, check out some photos to see if you want them planted in a perfectly straight row or if you’d prefer a staggered look. Since you’re starting from scratch, you can avoid the row if you want.

They might look a little sparse that first year or two, but I promise, you will be glad you gave them the space they need in a few years.

My dude is not a gardener. He may excel at trenches, but not so good at plants.

First, that’s obviously not 1ft away.

Second, depending on what type of yew that is, they can get MASSIVE. Find out the exact species. Let’s hope it’s a Monloo yew with an overall small max size. Those get to be 3ft tall and 8 to 10ft wide. You would plant it 11ft from the house if you don’t plan on pruning. Otherwise, plan for annual pruning.

I’m used to seeing people plant things too close to the house, but they still usually leave *some* space. SMH

Too close!!! And too close together. Read the labels on spacing. Also spacing should give you a good idea how far to place away from the house/foundation. And all plants grow bigger than what you think – that’s why there are soooo many houses with jungles covering the front of the house!

  7. you want foundation damage, cause this is how you get foundation damage.. at least 4 feet from foundation is best solution.

  8. Rocktown_Leather

Insanely too close. 1 foot away isn’t even enough. Unless you want the roots growing into your foundation in 5 or 10 years. What about foundation drainage. Do you know if you have a perimeter of foundation drainage down at your foundation footing level? If so, get far away unless you want to destroy it.

  9. Shacasaurus

Lol I don’t think you could get any closer

  10. Teacher-Investor

At least 2 ft too close, and you only need 3 plants max.

  11. classicman1008

Don’t plant ANYTHING closer than 3 feet to your house.

Lmao hope you don’t mind eventually repairing your foundation. 5ft for shrubs, 10-15ft min for ornamental trees and if you want to leave full size trees 20ft plus from the foundation. These are mainly for anyone on crawlspace or basement as a slab wouldn’t be as easily damaged by roots.

    Perfect! đŸ€©

But maybe a few more inches off the house. Like 36-48 inches. đŸ˜‚đŸ€Ł

Gardener needs to go back to school.

Water destroys houses slowly but surely. Plants can hold water against homes. Plants also have this annoying habit of spreading their roots to find more water, and can even break through concrete

Do you trust your siding to be continuously dampened by the plants? Do you trust the foundation (or hopefully root barrier) is strong enough to hold against root penetration?

Our yews are about 20 years old,.7 feet away from the house and touch the house. I HATE THEM. If I could rip them up myself I would. They’re from the previous owner. Ugly, giant plant.

  16. OlDirtyJesus

Too close. Are those yew bushes? Hard to tell but they have aggressive root systems.

You need to fire this guy asap, he is not a gardener. If he is committing this sort of idiocy here we have to assume he making other major horticultural mistakes elsewhere on your property. Depending on the specific cultivar they should be planted **at least** four feet out from the foundation.

  18. hobokobo1028

Yes. And when you move them out be sure to compact and slope your backfill away from the house

  19. justcurious-666

0-5 feet from your house you want clear of plants and brush and debris to be Fire-Wise

  20. Phildonic

    Absolutely way, way, too close!
Depending on which type of yew, they should be at a bare minimum, 4 feet to center. I’ve had upright yews and bushing yews so I can tell you. Upright yews run 4-6 feet in diameter while bushes can be 8 to 10 feet in diameter. And even if you prune them, their roots stay strong. They’re always seeking nutrients and your septic line is fair game.
If you plant them as shown not only will the backside greens die off but the roots WILL find a way to invade your basement/ crawl space.
Also how did this “gardener” dig out that trench without cutting into drainage?
I see this all the time when I’m out driving. The only other no-no for me that runs a close second is the mulch volcano. I think you should talk to the lead guy and if they think that this acceptable fire them on the spot.
    Seriously.
