🥉GOOD🥉If you are just looking for ground cover and soil erosion control, the Kentucky 31 is great and cheap. https://geni.us/8OZWaU (Amazon)

🥈BETTER🥈A good mid level seed is Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra. Still affordable and it’ll have better color than the Kentucky 31. I’ve used it for years with great results. https://geni.us/Fj38BI (Amazon)

🥇BEST🥇And if you want a really high end seed that is SUPER dark green, check out my buddy Jesse’s seed, truly top notch stuff and definitely some of the darkest greenest grass on the market https://thelawnlife.com/?sca_ref=8491376.kt3X9mlOWUi

I had a mole that was doing a ton of damage to my yard and I’m going to show you how I got rid of it quickly in three easy steps the first step in getting rid of a problematic pest is identifying what exactly you’re dealing with and more than one animal can dig tunnels in your yard vs that’s V with a V are kind of like big mice that mostly run through the grass and dig shallow partial tunnels I thought that what I had was possibly a v because I saw some older tunnels that were collapsed and washed out that looked like the partial surface tunnels that a might make you can trap a v just like a mouse just get the big rat trap version of the classic snap trap it can be baited with peanut butter and bird seed and placed near the tunnel and covered with a cardboard box Gophers are another digging animal that can do a ton of damage but they usually leave behind piles of dirt so it was easy to rule them out my tunnels were completely underground so I was fairly confident I had a mole on my hands once I was pretty sure I knew what I was working with it was time for step two and that’s identifying an active tunnel most tunnel in the yard because they’re looking for food plain and simple they usually have a main tunnel that they frequent most often and from there they have several arteries or legs that go off of that Main Highway I want to take a second to bust a common piece of advice that I see online all the time everyone automatically thinks grubs if you have moles and that’s a reasonable guess and if you have a lot of grubs you might see an uptick in mole activity however the next part is what I don’t agree with and that’s if you treat the grubs and get rid of them with a product like Scott’s grub a or something similar then the moles won’t have a food source and they’ll just go away no they won’t the most common food source for moles is earthworms they love them and if your grass is growing in dirt and I’m guessing it is then there will be worms and that’s plenty good enough of a reason for a mole to go foraging through your yard here I’ll even prove it to you by digging up a small section you can see there are no grubs but because it’s dirt I do have worms and therefore a mole problem you can step on existing tunnels to collapse them and then come back later to see which tunnels are repaired or pushed back up those are your active tunnels and that’s where you’d want to focus your attention the mold tunnel in my yard were hard to see on camera so I’m using a marking paint to help you see what I was dealing with I have a main tunnel coming out of the woods into the lawn and then I have a few tunnels that go off of that I came out the next day and noticed even more activity and that really shows how quickly a mole can do damage if you don’t do anything to solve the problem so the orange paint is marking the tunnels that I found initially and the blue paint is marking the new tunnels that popped up overnight that mole’s been busy okay so I’ve identified the mole in step one and I found an active tunnel in step two step three is actually getting rid of the mole itself and I’ve got a few different products to show you that will accomplish that my favorite products are traps and the first one is the most popular mole trap on the market and it’s the Victor outo sight mole Eliminator this is a classic scissor style trap that once set is placed in the tunnel and buried as the mole comes along through the tunnel the Trap will get tripped and there are two sets of Jaws that will quickly clamp shut these traps work great however they require a bit of digging in the lawn because you have to clear a fairly large section of the tunnel to set it and bury it it’s kind of big a less intrusive option and a personal favorite of mine is this gopherhawk snare style trap this tube-shaped trap has a metal strap cage on the end of it and goes into the tunnel from the top when the mole comes along and trips it the springloaded snare quickly cinches uptight I like these traps because they’re easy to deploy in the tunnels from the top by a small hole and they don’t do a lot of damage to the lawn I’ll have links to this trap and all the products I’m talking about in the video description but to set this trap I’m first using the included probe to help pinpoint the tunnel because placement is key next I’m using the spike to punch a hole through the top of the tunnel and I’m kind of moving it around just to make sure my hole is big enough the Trap goes in from the top and pulled back to set on shallower tunnels I like to use some wire supports to make sure the Trap stays upright and doesn’t fall over this trap works on moles and small gophers and Gophers tend to dig deeper so it isn’t that much of a problem but moles are right under the surface so I always brace the traps just in case I’m also putting just a bit of dirt around the base of the trap to make sure all the light is blocked out so the mole doesn’t suspect anything and I set up a few of these all along the main tunnel setting multiple traps just casts a bigger net and increases your odds of success and now we wait and continue to wait an entire day went by and I had no action at all nothing I checked the area and no more tunnels had popped up and none of the traps were tipped over or anything like that I just don’t think my little guy had been by yet my fear was was that he mostly lived in the woods right off of my lawn and in there he could tunnel all he wanted and I would never know I’d dump leaves and grass clippings in there so tracking tunnels would be impossible there are other solutions for a problem like this and the most common one is these poisonous smoke bombs by digging out a small access to the tunnel they can be inserted and quickly covered they’ll fill the whole tunnel network with smoke so it doesn’t really matter where the mole is it will find it I’m supercharging the effect with a leaf blower so you can see how elaborate the tunnel system is and how the smoke fills in everywhere you can also drop these baits from Tom cat into the tunnel they’re designed to look like earthworms a mol’s natural food source like I mentioned earlier in the video with this method you basically insert the worms into the tunnel at various spots and that’s it it’s pretty easy and not intrusive at all with the smoke bombs and bait method you don’t actually know if your mole problem is solved what I like about the traps is that you know for sure if you’ve got them let’s rewind back to my traps where it had been a day with no activity and I was about to move on to a different method when I noticed one of the traps had been triggered with the gopherhawk traps you can see yellow when they go off so it’s easy to see from a distance and I actually spotted it from inside my house I carefully removed the Trap from the ground and sure enough there was my mole moles are absolutely fascinating animals they live underground but their fur is velvety and doesn’t really seem to get dirty and just look at the massive Diggers on this guy too purpose built for destroying Lawns moles tend to work independently and are somewhat Terri teritorial you might see a lot of tunnels over a decently large area but chances are it’s only one mole doing all the damage I’ve had a lot of success with these gopherhawk traps and I even took them over to my parents house and helped them take care of a mole situation they were having in their front yard for more information on burrowing animal removal there’s a great documentary on Netflix it features a professional groundskeeper at a golf course who uses some pretty unorthodox methods it’s called catty Shack if you like this video subscribe to the channel I post awesome DIY Home and Lawn Care content all the time and as usual thanks for watching

  1. I tried all this methods non worked. My moles are too big to fit in the gopher hawk. I came up with high tech redneck to get my moles. I stamp down the active tunnels. I then water that area good because that gets the worms moving. I get my camping chair, shovel, bucket and my iPad. I watch YouTube videos and wait till they move. When they move I scoop them out with my shovel. If they survive they get a ride to the country if they don’t I have a mole cemetery which I think helps deter moles. Since I started the cemetery, I have a lot less activity in my yard.

  2. What if I cannot identify an active tunnel? I have dozens of holes through the yard yet I cannot see an active tunnel leading to any of them. I have set traps where I think an active run is. I have put poison and smoke in each hole. I have tried these methods for the past two years with no results. I am so desperate that i have tried gum and the garden hose and none of these have produced results. I don't know what else to do. Maybe sonic spikes?

  3. I had a vole problem with them building a nest under my new keystone block steps next to my driveway. I used a combination of things, but the winner was a simple mousetrap with nothing but peanut butter. At first, I had no luck for several weeks, with ants getting the peanut butter. Then one Friday I came home and found one in the trap. I reset the trap and five minutes later I had another. Within two hours I had caught a total of seven, and I haven't seen any since. That was three years ago. Now I'm working on the moles with two Gopher Hawk Traps. I'll keep you posted once I start seeing the moles again.

  4. Easiest way is a product called Mole Patrol. A few pellets in a hole you make in the tunnel (not with your fingers) and they're gone!

  5. Moles are beneficial. They eat the insect larvae that destroy plants both above and below ground. They do no eat roots. They are carnivores.
Voles and gophers are the critters you don't want.

  6. Forget the cat, try a Beagle.

You'll shovel a lot of dirt back into the ground, but within a day or two, no moles voles, or frankly, any other rodent.

    They don't come back, either.

  7. Gopherhawk is garbage. I caught one mole, now it will not reset. I followed all of their videos and instructions. I even contacted the company and the basically just told me to follow the instructions on their site. It's pretty obvious i have a defective item, but customer service is not something they care about. I live in the midwest with really ideal soil, hence my mole problem. So if you can afford to spend $40 for a trap that is disposable after one use…go for it i guess. Otherwise just get that wire-tek scissor style. It's about half the price of the gopherhawk and doesn't look like it cost 5 bucks to make. I learned my lesson and i am spreading the word that the gopherhawk works ok, but may break after one use and the company will ghost you when you reach out to them. Save your 40 bucks for a different trap

  8. Important ,that you wear latex gloves when installing your traps. These little Bastards can smell you on the traps.

  9. Broke my foot and blew out my knee stepping into a mole tunnel near our front steps last summer. I got the little S.O.B. !

  10. I have used the Gopher Hawk trap probably 50 times.
I have 2 of them and I have set them around 25 times each and to this day I have caught ZERO Moles, ZERO Voles, and my yard looks like a bomb went off.
These traps are terrible to me, now I know you have to find active trails but how in the world do you do that.
I've given up on the Gopher Hawks and I'm moving on to some other method.
I have no idea how to get rid of them and at this point, I can't have a yard anymore
Please offer any help you can!!!!!!
    Thnkx!!!

  11. I’d just leave them to it. I have a very informal lawn anyways – much better for wildlife and less labour intensive for me!

  12. Back in the day, my dad used highway flares. That sulfur is so strong that they can't even return to the tunnels even if it didn't kill them. But it usually wiped them out.

  13. The gopher hawk trap is the biggest scam out there, save your money, it's absolute garbage. Why wouldn't they provide a stand for it, you have to rig it using your own wire supports? FOR THAT PRICE? Nahhh

  14. I have a Rottweiler dachshund mix she terminates all vermin , she killed 7 pack rats in one go, I can tell cause she doesn't eat the trails. Just Geta wiener dog

  15. Never had luck with traps. Neighbor shared his method and ive gotten hundreds over the last 15 ish years. Flatten all their tunnels, then keep checking back with shovel in hand. Have to sneak up as they can feel your footsteps and will stop moving. Scan the area for freshly pushed up dirt (usually moist). Watch that area closely for movement. When see movement and you determine the direction they are going, sneak closer and stab shovel into the ground BEHIND them 4" approx. then quickly push shovel deeper with foot, then turn that shovel fullnof dirt upside down. Will see upside down critter waiting to be dispatched with shovel. Yeah, its not for the faint of heart, but it is highly effective. If they are not moving, dont bother with the shovel as they may have backed up from where they were and you'll do unnecessary yard escavation.

  16. I've been using my gas torch and a sparker meant for barbecues, the sparker is taped to a 3' length of small hose and a 15 second mix of ox/acetylene is shot into the hole, then the sparker is pushed and BAM! Experience has taught me how much gas, and how long, the kill rate seems to be nearly 100%.
