I don't really know what I'm doing but after reading so many helpful posts in here I decided to just get started and I'll figure it out as I go. The tarps have been down for 3 weeks or so and we have another month of 90 degree weather. (Houston area, zone 9)
I will add a couple more tarps to fill in the area. I just put out these stones that I hope will help create a barrier against the St Augustine grass until I can get the whole lawn converted. I have a large backyard and I am doing this with a limited budget so I'll have to work in stages.
Including a cat tax. That's our neighborhood Kingpin, Julio. He supervises my work. And he judges.

I’d also like to say I welcome any tips! Or loving reminders to be patient. 🙂
On patch at a time is definitely the way to go!! After 12 years in this house, I have one section of native meadow. A section of whatever I want and freebies from friends. A section of calendula, sunflowers, and other self seeding flowers, a veggie garden, a woodland area (just two small trees so far 🤪, and I think I’m now hooked on dahlias. Oh, and a patch of lawn. It has been nice to follow my interests and whims. If you start with native plants, you should be rewarded quickly as they will perform best.
Oh and start with a tree to shade at least part of your house from that brutal Houston heat.
