My Nana always had a couple of African Violets together on a sill, and she'd talk lovingly to them. This is my first flower since she passed, and I can't help but think of her today and smile.

I forget where I originally got her from, but the soil was so old that it was bone dry, light as a feather, and only half full.
I was slowly rewatering her, but I didn't have much hope.
A few months ago, I threw on some fresh soil and watered her occasionally. Today I am rewarded with my first flower.
It looks like there are lots of buds in there, too, so I should be rewarded for a while yet. I just wanted to show off to people who might care.

Definitely refresh her soil once in a while, add fertilizer and place in bright indirect light.

    Great save.

Not to knock what you’ve done, and I apologize for the unsolicited advice, but you should probably refresh the soil by repotting it. When you are ready to do that, take it out of the pot, shake off as much of the old soil as possible. Pot it back up in the same pot (wash the pot first) with a soil-less potting mix that you’ve added perlite to. I use a seed germination potting mix that I add perlite to. One scoop of potting mix, one scoop of perlite. Course perlite. Mix it up. Make sure the leaves of the AV do not touch the soil when you pot it up. This includes the petioles of the leaves. General rule is to repot AVs every 6 months to a year. And by repot, it doesn’t mean move to a bigger pot. The pot should be 1/3 the width of the plant as measured from leaf end to leaf end on opposite of the plant.

    Best of Luck.

Look how many buds (is that more in the back emerging?), a little love goes a long way 🥰👏. I’m glad she is bringing you happy memories of your Nana, please share another picture when more buds open 💖
