SERIES 36 | Episode 28
Sophie explains how different types of hydrangeas contribute to the garden ecosystem.
Hydrangeas are the perfect plant for adding colour to a moist, shady spot.
But when you go to choose one, why not think about what the hydrangea does for your garden, not just what it does for you?
Hydrangeas have both sterile and fertile flowers. Cultivars with big showy blooms such as the mophead varieties tend to be the most popular. Most of the flower inflorescence is made up of sterile flowers with large, colourful sepals, and these have no benefit to pollinators.
Lace cap hydrangeas on the other hand, have sterile flowers on the outside, but on the inside, there are lots of tiny flowers full of nectar and pollen, which is an absolute magnet for bees and other beneficial bugs.
If you can’t go past the big showy mopheads, then be sure to plant something else nearby as a food source for beneficial bugs.
