SHREVEPORT, La. – With cooler weather settling in, fall is the perfect time to refresh your garden with vegetables and herbs that thrive in North Louisiana’s climate.
At Akin’s Nursery and Landscaping, owner Jennifer McGimsey says leafy greens lead the way.
“Lettuce, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collards, and spinach all do really well here in the fall,” she said.
Herbs are another strong option for gardeners. Basil will continue to grow until the first freeze, and other varieties can also flourish if planted now.
“You probably need to get started quickly if you’re planting from seed, but transplants are great to put in right now,” McGimsey said. “They’ll do well until a hard freeze.”
While most people associate tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant with summer gardens, McGimsey said fall is a second chance to enjoy them.
“We’re about to cool off and have another very favorable growing period,” she noted. “If you put your transplants in the ground soon, you should be able to harvest before the first hard freeze.”
Whether it’s a basket of spinach or a late crop of tomatoes, fall offers gardeners in the region a chance to extend the growing season — and the harvest.
