Kinda looks like a milkweed seed pod. If you are in the US midwest, that would be my guess.
If it is milkweed, spread those seeds far and wide because they could become habitat for Monarch butterflies.

The crazy shape is actually useful for the plant because it makes it so their seed pods get hooked on the legs of animals. So as they walk and break the pods they spread the seeds. Like a little violent looking shoe.
