Man, people leave the coolest stuff out in the trash. Check out this little chest that I just found. It’s 80 or 100red years old and it’s just going in the garbage. It’s got a great mix of machine and hand tool woodworking. And we can see that from the tool marks here on the front of the chest. We can see these vertical lines and these are from an old machine planer for sure and one that wasn’t very sharp either. But then the ends of the chest were definitely beveled with a hand plane. You can see the sort of uneven surface as somebody worked with wood that wasn’t perfectly flat. The boards were crosscut with a hand saw and then the corners of the chest were just nailed together with common round nails. Seems simple, but it’s really held together. And the builder wanted the edge of the chest to have a nice decorative molding, but he obviously didn’t have any way to do that. So, he just took this cane right here and tacked it all around the edge of the lid, giving the impression of a molding profile without having to cut one. Overall, it’s a simple piece, but it looks nice and it’s perfectly solid. Somebody should really take this thing home and keep it from going in the trash. I mean, not me. I’m not going to I really should. I’m I’ll see you

Just love this,. Some ppl definitely don't know what they're throwing away,.. got a gold watch and gold ring in a stash of costume jewellery a few week ago, .. it was in the trash but no way was it trash..
But …
A neighbour just gave me a large bag of woodworking tools incl alongside the planes I been looking for, a wooden box plane , draw knives , files chisels however I'm extremely conflicted, they were his father's, he has shared some awful things bringing my own trauma to the surface. He is ignorant to how I have told him to stop over sharing, that the awareness is affecting me, it's been 4 days now, and I'm still hugely affected,. I refuse to have them in my home and told him they stay as far from me as possible, I'm not strong enough to cope with the distress but he's happy hes so happy he's pushing them upon me that he doesn't care whatsoever how conflicted I am, yes I do require hand woodworking tools, but I don't need those, they might just go in the trash
I grabbed me a really nice big wooden chest from a house that was set tom burn down. Didn't look like much with some bad green sloppy paint on it, but i sanded ut down completely. Best part there was no metal nails used anywhere, only wooden ones for the lid, and the sides was done proper with no glue, just nicely cut Dovetail joints 🙂
I have a trash can like this that needs rebuilt but I don’t have the skill
Restoration video!!!
Americans really don't have a culture, just a desire for spending and wasting
Is woodwork still good in the slammer 😂
As we say in Australia, you're such a dag, Rex! (It's a term of endearment for your lovable not-cool friend.)
I can’t be the only one who saw the thumbnail and expected Rex to be dangling a used condom in front of the camera.
You're right about that Rex a couple of months back I found a complete wicker chest of drawers with drawers that were perfectly intact that is something that I definitely took and kept it from going in the trash
Why do your eyes always seem like you are high af when you record these videos
It’s ok Rex. You’re merely holding on to it until it finds a home.
The trash in my town is garbage. No luck finding furniture or lone pieces of wood.
Don't tell his wife!
Someone should really take this thing home … not me …
Who are you trying to fool here?
I think my entire generation is guilty of not seeing the art and value in good crafts. 😢
Makes me sad that someone would just throw that out, but i'm glad you found it.
Does your wife yell at you as much as mine yells at me when I come home with these killer finds???
I kinda wish I was closer to Cleveland. I'd love for you to do a Furniture Forensics video about the toddler's rocking chair I have that was my grandfather's.
Earlier today I saw someone threw out some shelves with really cool shaped supports. I would have LOVED to bring them home, but I have no place I could have put them.
😢
these things can sometimes bring bedbugs with them
Ooohh re touched grass, thought he was a shed recluse 😅👍
That wasn't on the street to go to the landfill, that was on the street to go to one of the thousands of people like you and me who treat bulk pickup week as a state sanctioned free swap meet. In my neighborhood, there's about an 80% chance it'll get picked up before the city gets to it.
I always appreciate a master of the craft demonstrating that good craftsmanship is a lot more than building
Investigating other people’s work can teach you a lot, and sharing that with us can teach us a lot.
Thanks for the forensics episode Rex
Honey! Look what followed me home!
Long suffering wife stare.
So…what you going to use it for.😊
I will see you later, my grandfather made tables for living but he passed away before teaching me.
… the question is… did you take it home?
I once found a 10 litre paint jug filled with human excriment when working as a garbage man in my youth, so yh, good find on your end.
So when is the video of you fixing that chest ! 😁
There comes a time in every mans life where he must decide whether to stay married or bring home another trash treasure
Yes, you are taking it home.
❤
I gotta move to where you live and go through the trash.
Looks like a decent Persian rug is being thrown out with it. Outrageous. I hope you grabbed both!
Aren't you guys worried about what those furniture have been used for, and any contamination?
I mean the thing is begging for a nice veneer top for a refresh.
That rug looks suspiciously hand made too
This is how i get all my wood and hardware. Reclaim, recycle, reuse
Honey, rex is caressing our trash again!
This video is amazing I really appreciate the effort.
You’re really passionate about wood working❤
I've seen that cane molding in a few old timer's houses
Over 50% of the interior of my home is either found in the trash and restored or bought cheaply and then restored. I don't have a lot that I've bought from new, except my electrical stuff (because here most people want as close to the original sales price as possible, but they almost always sell after warranty is out, at which point I may as well buy new and get that warranty)
People back then we're just doing anything 😂
I love these breakdowns of old pieces. I still remember the one when you went to that old store with a million tools and saw the original low bench from a book you read.
In place like North East PA and upstate NY I used to find things much nicer than this out on the curb or in a yard sale for $10-15. It's hard to comprehend how much old furniture etc is back east… boggles the mind. In poorer areas like the inner city true antiques that have had a hard life can be found out on the curb sometimes.
