Come hang out with me for some garden jobs this weekend!
Hey everyone. I am out doing some jobs for the weekend,
and so I thought that I would share them with you. So many of you asked like, what am I doing certain jobs or when am I
sewing or planting certain things? So I thought that I would just share today
and take you along and show you what I’m doing. So let’s go. It is tomato seedling time and I’m really excited to be able
to start putting some of these out. Now, I had mentioned a product
called a Wall of Water a few weeks ago
and I was going to follow up with a role for that,
but I hadn’t done yet. So I am going to do that now
and just show you how I plant out my tomatoes
a little bit sooner than I probably should,
but I protect them with a wall of water. It’s an older product
and it’s been around a long time for us. But just for those of you who don’t know
what it is I wanted to show you. All right, so this is what a wall of water
looks like. It’s like a little plastic little donut type shape thing. And then if you can see
there’s little sections in here and they’re all individually partitioned. So what you will do is you will fill up each
one of those little sections with water. And I’m going to show you how
I’ve done that once I get it all filled, because I only have two arms
and I can’t hold this and the hose and the camera at the same time. So let’s check back in a minute and we’ll
see how cozy our tomato is in there once I get it filled up. So once you have it filled up, it’s going
to be kind of like a little accordion. And each one of those
is filled with water. And then inside is my little tomato plant. And the idea is that
this water is going to absorb the heat from the sun throughout the day,
and then it’s going to kind of keep a nice little warm air pocket
and insulate that tomato to bring up the ambient temperature
and there so that I can grow and be protected from the frost. Now, last year,
what I did just to add extra security because I set my tomato plants out
in February, I covered the tops of these
also with a row cover just to make sure
my tomato plants got late, but that no frost could,
you know, come in there at night. Now that may be a little bit extra,
but I wasn’t taking any chances with the tomato plants, so I’m going to be
planting tomatoes all along that row and I’ll be setting out one of these
walls of water over top of each plant. And that’s because I’ve got still maybe 2 to 3 more weeks of frost potential here
where I am a little bit south of Tucson. In fact,
we actually got a hard frost last night. I did not have all of my potato
plants covered and some of them definitely got some frost damage on that. So yeah, I think it was about 31 here. So I am not going to take any chances,
but I want to get my tomatoes out so that they can really start
to get growing and ready to start giving me lots of yummy fruit. The other job is something that I mentioned a couple of days ago
and that is harvesting. And all of these turn out, these solid
turnips are still looking really good, even though they
did start going to flower a little bit.
