For the past 4 years this little section behind our garage has been pretty much just left alone. I finally got around to cutting all the tall bushes and shrubs down but now im left with is this. Is there anything i can use to get rid of all the vines and ivy or am i just gonna have to go in and rip it out by hand?

  1. Put a bunch of cardboard down on it for a few weeks, the lack of sun will kill a lot of it.

If you rip it out by hand it will come right back . You need to spray it then wait for the spray to work . Don’t do anything for a month. Just ignore it . When you spray do not spray tree . I would use roundup in a 2 gal. Sprayer . Spray thoroughly . You will be happy.

A rake, a secateur and maybe a hedge shear.
Or a trimmer but if you never used one before you’ll be faster with the hand tools.

Have you tried just taking care of them and nurturing them? If it was me that stuff would be dead within a couple weeks.
Edited because I missed a word.

The fastest way to do it is just yank everything up. It’s a small area, so you could do it in an hour or two.

In my city, there is a company who will bring sheep and goats from their farm to your property for a few days to graze. With a google search to see if it’s available.

Go in with weed wacker (a good gas powered one), shovel up all that crap into a garbage pile. Put down cardboard. That’ll help kill the routes of what you just chopped out.
It’s good days work if you aren’t used to doing stuff like this.

I clear woods for a living basically. I would chop everything down off the fence and pile it up in the middle then run a push mower over it all. Put a tarp over it and let time do its thing. Come back once a week or biweekly whatever works for you. It’ll take a couple times to exhaust the roots of energy but it will all die.

Or you could use herbicide if you don’t mind the runoff going elsewhere possibly. Still mulch it with a push mower though.

Roundup caused cancer in people who used it at twice the strength that is available today, for years at long hours, without any breathing protection. The quickest way to clean this up is to use Roundup. No more than you will need and for a such a short time that you will be in no danger.

No, I don’t work for Monsanto or Bayer. I’m a retired lawyer who read the court decision. I’m also a state extension master gardener.

Wait two weeks after using it to start planting things.

Solarization then rip up then sheet mulch.

I had invasive Virginia creeper covering much of my backyard. I cut it down, put two layers of thick cardboard, and 6 inches of heavy mulch. I worked well. That was 5 years ago. II remulch every 2-3 years. t still appears in small patches, but I use herbicides when I see it.

I am finally getting to the point where I feel comfortable putting in raised beds. I will put cardboard under those too.

It was a long process, but it was easy and paid off in the long run.

    Salt.

    Lots of it.

(But don’t plan on growing anything else.)

Clear it out with a Weedeater and then mow and trim on same schedule as you probably do to your front yard.

Gasoline on 1 gallon sprayer.. spray away and nothing will be living

Wtf is wrong with people? Get some garden tools and go to work. Tear that shit out. Use elbow grease. Why on earth make things overly complicated?!

The only way to truly eradicate the English ivy is to dig it out to remove the roots. Sprays will kill foliage but not the root of ivy.

Brush Killer. Worked great on the poison ivy in my back yard.

    (RM18 or RM43) + Triclopyr

    That combination will kill everything.

    Roundup. Go ahead…it’ll be ok.

Ivy is the bane of my garden. Ripping it out is futile. Ive tried cutting vines and putting small bottles of vinegar on them. The vine takes the vinegar down and kills it. So far this summer I killed about 2 ft off the individual vine. Its useless. But having fun getting creative. If your not in a rush can cover the lot with black tarpaulin, blocks the sun and kills it. Probably wanna cut it back first. Dont take a strimmer to the ivy, each piece can root a new plant. Bloody ivy.
