Basil cutting looking week after 13 days taking root in water in partial lighting.

This is the furthest I’ve gotten after six failed cuttings. Trying not to kill this one.

Does it need direct sun light but in a cool room to prevent burning what little leaves survived stress and rot?

  1. First thing I would do is plant it in a much smaller pot. I think it’s way too big for the current size. Also, are you saying you rooted these in water first? How long were the roots before you planted it?

Definitely way too big of a pot. What is partial light? Basil can handle direct light (outside in the sun) when acclimated- and it’s where they grow best. I’m not going to lie, those cuttings are in rough shape.

I don’t understand why you don’t just buy seeds that cost $1-2 a pack and put them in a pot outside in full sun to grow. It’d be much easier and you’d have better results than propagating them.

I’m a newbie too so no expert advice but after multiple failed attempts at transferring water propagated basil to soil, I’m having success so far with first transferring to a mix of perlite and sphagnum peat moss. I keep it in a plastic bag for humidity and open it for a few hours a day for airflow. I’ve had 3 stems successfully growing like this for 2 weeks so I just transferred the rest to the same mix 🤞 The next step is to transfer it to its final soil/container, thoughts and prayers needed.

As an aside, once I put the water propagating stems under a grow light, the root and new leaf growth was unbelievable within just a few days. These are all stems I cut from an existing plant.
