It's at least 5 years old, but those new growths moving closer into the garden are a little worrying…

There are 2 things in life you should never trust: farts and bamboo.

It is clumping bamboo. Mostly. It’s sending off runners to start a new clump…

Chop it down, dig out every little bit of it you can find, put glyphosate on any new shoots you see ever. Do this yesterday.

If it is clumping bamboo, it’s not great loss. Stick a pot over the hole. If it isn’t clumping bamboo, you’ve just saved your self a major headache.

the runners are usually not deep so you might be able to tidy it up

Bamboos get a lot of negative reqactions but if you know how to control it you get a nice useful crop of canes every year.

Pot it if you want it. Do not let it establish

If you want the look of it being in the ground use a dustbin as a pot and just cut off runners

I spent the last four years trying to control the bamboo in my garden until I fully ripped it all out this year.

It was planted by a previous owner too close to the house and over time it broke out of its little brick wall enclosure and sent runners out under the patio, through multiple beds and then appeared very close to the house through concrete.

It spreads incredibly quickly and can grow from tiny pieces left behind.

    I wouldn’t trust any bamboo anymore 😅

Clumping bamboo just takes longer to spread. The woman that we bought our house from assured us that the bamboo was clumping, and it stayed in place for 15 years. And then it didn’t. We decided it had to go because new canes started appearing 15 feet from the main plant. By then it needed a mini-digger to get the root ball of the main plant out.

I planted one a few years ago that looks like that.. mines fine, never spread, just got thicker, which is what I wanted. I have more issues with bloody ferns. They’ve spread all over the front garden.

It’s vicious stuff – grows rapidly underground and it as tough as leather, don’t let those flimsy leaves blowing delicately in the breeze fool you, it will spread.

I have 10 ft tall growing in pots – and that’s where they’re staying.

Don’t want to realise an alien in my garden 😅
