Howdy! It’s my first year with my garden and it’s been full of ups and downs.. mostly downs, but I’m proud of the humble little assortment of veggies I’ve been able to harvest. I’ve been growing some currant tomatoes since March and although they’ve been stubborn to fruit for me, they’ve grown into quite the jungle. Now I’ve had some issues with aphids and other pests on my peppers and okra, but my tomatoes have been pretty resilient when it comes to pest problems.. until a couple of weeks ago when I was greeted by my first group of hornworms. I had seen some of you posting about hornworms in your gardens and figured it was only a matter of time. I’ve been picking them off and relocating them and it hasn’t been too much of an issue, I try not to do too much intervention in my beds. But today, after a couple of days away from the garden because of the cooler weather, I was watering my raised bed and came face to face with this Goliath! I had no idea they could even get this big, the others have been a fraction of this size. I was both terrified and amazed. Little guy had quite the death grip too, I ended up having to chop the branch off because I couldn’t pry him off.
Just wanted to share. Has anyone seen a hornworm this big before? I inspected the rest of my tomato plants but didn’t find any others. Probably not the last I’ll be seeing of them though.
