SERIES 36 | Episode 03

Macadamia nut trees are native to the tropical and sub-tropical parts of Australia, but they can be grown further south.

They will even fruit in Melbourne; usually from when the tree is about 4 or 5 years old.

Modern cultivars have been bred to be smaller – some only 4-5 metres tall – so are suitable for smaller gardens.

They can also be grown in a large pot.

However, they do need frost protection when they’re young, and they won’t survive waterlogged soil. Add plenty of organic matter and choose a protected site with good drainage.
